No military deployment in Ablekuma North rerun – Defence Minister assures
The Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has assured the public that there will be no military deployment in the Ablekuma North Constituency during today’s parliamentary election re-run.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Dr. Omane Boamah emphasised that the Ghana Police Service will be solely responsible for maintaining security throughout the election process.
The decision, he noted, is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, democratic, and citizen-friendly atmosphere at the polls.
“To ensure a peaceful and democratic process, the Ghana Police Service will be fully in charge of security for today’s elections in Ablekuma North Constituency. There will be no military deployment,” the post read.
Dr. Omane Boamah referenced past incidents of electoral violence—including the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and the deaths of eight civilians during the 2020 general elections—as reasons to avoid military involvement in civil electoral matters.
“We must learn from these experiences and prioritize citizen safety and security,” he stated, reiterating confidence in the police service’s capacity to manage electoral security professionally.
He further urged voters to participate peacefully and expressed confidence in Ghana’s democratic process, while encouraging the use of body cameras and promoting transparency.
The rerun in 19 polling stations within the constituency follows disputes over the December 7, 2024, parliamentary election results, which left Ablekuma North without representation in the 9th Parliament.
