Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, has assured that Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are fully prepared and committed to responding promptly should Speaker Alban Bagbin issue a recall for parliamentary proceedings.
His statement follows the indefinite adjournment of Parliament on Tuesday, October 22, after a heated session marked by disputes between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over which caucus holds the majority in the House.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Ayariga emphasized that NDC MPs would immediately answer the Speaker’s call, underscoring their dedication to fulfilling their legislative responsibilities despite the current tensions.
He stressed that their willingness to return to the Chamber reflects the party’s commitment to the nation’s governance process.
Parliament’s adjournment came after sharp divisions between the two parties on who had occupied the majority side in Parliament.
Ayariga pointed out that NPP MPs were significantly underrepresented during the session, with fewer than 30 members present in the Chamber. He criticized the NPP for his lack of preparedness and seriousness in conducting parliamentary business.
Ayariga also took aim at NPP MPs, accusing them of contributing to the disruption, stating that their actions were part of a broader effort led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, whom Ayariga implied was attempting to maintain his standing as the former Majority Leader.
Despite the political standoff, Ayariga reiterated that the NDC MPs stand ready to serve and await the Speaker’s directive for the next step in parliamentary proceedings.
“Many of them [the NPP MPs] are in their constituencies campaigning and so anytime the Speaker calls us, we will come and anytime the Speaker says we are the Minority, we will listen to him, but he hasn’t said that,” Ayariga told Umaru Sanda Amadu.
