NDC mourns loss of top party officials, officers in helicopter crash
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians, including top party officials and personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces.
In a press release signed by General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party confirmed the passing of Defence Minister and leading party member Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Environment Minister and MP for Tamale Central Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; National Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna; and former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Mr. Samuel Aboagye.
Also among the deceased were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo; all members of the Ghana Armed Forces.
“This is a devastating moment for our Party and for our nation,” the NDC stated. “We have lost not only loyal comrades, but also exemplary patriots who served Ghana with honour, courage, and unwavering dedication.”
Describing the incident as an irreplaceable loss to the party, the government, and the country as a whole, the NDC extended its “deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the people of Ghana.”
The statement further declared that the legacy of the deceased “will continue to inspire us all.”
The crash, involving a Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter, occurred during a flight from Accra to Obuasi on Wednesday, August 6. The aircraft lost radar contact shortly after takeoff, triggering a search-and-rescue operation which ended with confirmation that all eight onboard had died.
President Mahama has declared national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast in honour of the departed.
