Moderator of Presbyterian Church of Ghana Urges Government to Resolve CETAG Strike
The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has called for swift action to end the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG). The strike, which began on June 14, was triggered by the government’s failure to implement CETAG’s arbitral award and conditions of service, as well as the freezing of CETAG members’ July salaries.
Speaking at the 16th graduation ceremony of Presbyterian College of Education Akropong-Akuapem, Rt. Rev. Kwakye urged the Ministry of Education, National Labour Commission, Fair Wages and Salary Commission, and Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to prioritize the situation and engage CETAG leadership in continuous negotiations to reach a resolution.
He appealed to all stakeholders and CETAG leadership to find a middle ground and reach a settlement, emphasizing the need for urgency to minimize the impact on trainee teachers and the academic calendar.
In a related development, the Principal of Presbyterian College of Education Akropong-Akuapem, Rev. Dr. Nicholas Apreh Siaw, expressed gratitude to the government for its support, citing GETFUND’s allocation of GH₵500,000 for academic and infrastructural development and an additional GH₵200,000 for faculty development and research.
