Supporting graduates to form cooperatives to bid for government contracts is important for several reasons:

Economic empowerment: By enabling graduates to form cooperatives and bid for government contracts, they can create sustainable businesses that generate income and employment opportunities. This can help reduce unemployment rates and contribute to economic growth.

Skill development: Working in cooperatives allows graduates to collaborate with others, share knowledge and expertise, and develop new skills. This can enhance their professional development and make them more competitive in the job market.

Local development: Cooperatives can help promote local development by keeping resources and profits within the community. This can lead to increased investment in local infrastructure, services, and businesses, ultimately benefiting the entire community.

Innovation and creativity: Cooperatives often foster a culture of innovation and creativity, as members work together to solve problems and develop new ideas. This can lead to the development of new products, services, and solutions that benefit both the cooperative and the wider economy.

Inclusivity and social cohesion: Cooperatives are based on principles of democratic decision-making and shared ownership, which can promote inclusivity and social cohesion. By supporting graduates from diverse backgrounds to form cooperatives, it can help create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Overall, supporting graduates to form cooperatives to bid for government contracts can have a positive impact on the economy, society, and individual members. It is important for government to provide the necessary support and resources to help these cooperatives succeed and contribute to sustainable development.

For these reasons the 2024 flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress, former President John Mahama has promised to support graduates from technical institutions, universities, and apprenticeship programmes to form cooperatives to bid for and execute government and private sector contracts if elected as president in the December 7 polls.

This intervention by Mahama can be a great way to empower young professionals and promote entrepreneurship in Ghana. By providing these groups with the necessary resources, training, and opportunities to access contracts, it can help them establish successful businesses, create jobs, and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
