Ghana makes progress in debt restructuring talks, assures fair treatment for all creditors

The Government of Ghana says it is making significant headway in its ongoing debt restructuring discussions with international creditors, in line with commitments under the G20 Common Framework.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Finance on Thursday, May 29, 2025, the government reaffirmed that no creditor has been given preferential treatment, stressing that all negotiations have adhered to the principle of Comparability of Treatment.
“We have strictly applied the provisions in the Memorandum of Understanding with our official creditors, and in particular, have continued to remain in arrears with all external creditors included in the debt restructuring perimeter,” the statement read.
The Ministry noted that Ghana is committed to achieving a fair and mutually beneficial resolution with all creditors and expressed gratitude to its international partners for their forbearance, cooperation, and support throughout the process.
The debt restructuring forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to restore macroeconomic stability and meet conditions tied to its ongoing support programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
This latest update signals steady progress in the Mahama-government’s efforts to tackle its debt burden while maintaining transparency and fairness in dealings with both bilateral and commercial creditors.
The Ministry assured the public and stakeholders that it will continue to provide updates of Ghana’s debt restructuring to Ghanaians.
