The Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw-Kotei, has stated categorically that all Chinese nationals arrested in connection with illegal mining will be dealt with in accordance with Ghanaian law.

She noted that the laws of Ghana bar foreigners from engaging in illegal mining activities.

Dr. Bissiw-Kotei explained that illegal foreign miners face prosecution under the Minerals and Mining Act, which can result in imprisonment and fines, and they are subject to deportation after serving their sentences. She further emphasized that foreigners found guilty of such crimes could be sentenced to 20 to 25 years, as well as deported after serving their sentence.

Her statement was in response to a question about the fate of Chinese nationals arrested in connection with illegal mining activities by her anti-galamsey taskforce.

“The laws of Ghana will deal ruthlessly with Chinese nationals engaged in illegal mining,” she stated.

“The Minerals and Mining Act stipulates that all foreigners arrested in connection with illegal mining and convicted can serve a minimum of ten years and a maximum of twenty-five years imprisonment. You would also be fined and repatriated after serving the sentence.”

She appealed to Ghanaians to support the fight against illegal mining activities since they remain a threat to human life, security, and the environment.

To those who have described her recent anti-galamsey fight as an activity for creating content, she expressed her disappointment, stressing that the ongoing fight is dangerous and not one to be used for content.
