Ablakwa: ‘Ghana will consolidate its role as a top 5 troops contributor to UN peacekeeping operations’
As the United Nations (UN) turns 80, Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has assured that Ghana shall be consolidating it enviable role as a top 5 troops contributor to UN peacekeeping operations in theatres of conflict across the world. In 2025, the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary, celebrating eight decades of promoting peace, human rights, social progress.
The UN currently deploys tens of thousands of peacekeepers across 11 operations to help countries navigate the difficult path from conflict to peace. It has facilitated the adoption of nearly 30 disarmament treaties and ensured the destruction of over 55 million landmines.
Mr Ablakwa also reaffirms Ghana’s steadfast belief in the UN Charter and renews the unwavering commitment to multilateralism. The Minister of Foreign Affairs said this when he welcomed the new United Nations Resident Coordinator, His Excellency Zia Choudhurry.

Mr Ablakwa received the open letters of His Excellency Zia Choudhurry in Accra on Tuesday, August 5.
Ghana will continue to be a lead advocate for UN reforms consistent with the African Union’s Ezulwini Consensus, Mr Ablakwa added.

The Ezulwini Consensus is a position on international relations and reform of the United Nations, agreed by the African Union. It calls for a more representative and democratic Security Council, in which Africa, like all other world regions, is represented.

“We shall strengthen our cooperation with the UN in all sectors to achieve President Mahama’s vision for resetting Ghana and achieving the SDGs.
“Congratulations, Excellency Choudhurry — your track record and passion for development inspires hope,” he wrote on his X page.
