Adua in New York for Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Hon. Muniru Limuna

On Saturday, August 23, 2025, the USA Zongo Caucus, under the leadership of its Coordinator Alhaji Abdul Salam Zeeba, in collaboration with the Yankasa Association of North America, convened a deeply moving Adua (Islamic prayer gathering) at the Yankasa Mosque in New York. The gathering honored the cherished memories of two towering Ghanaian Muslim figures — Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Hon. Muniru Limuna — who devoted their lives to public service, Islamic values, and the empowerment of their people.

The event was chaired by Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, Secretary of State and Chairman of the Zongo Caucus Advisory Council, whose stewardship gave the occasion a mark of dignity and statesmanship.

The Deputy Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations, Her Excellency Freda Bediako-Opuni, led a high-powered delegation from the Ghana Embassy, reaffirming that the legacies of the departed extend beyond the Zongo to the heart of Ghana’s nationhood. The Zongo Chiefs in New York, the leadership and membership of Yankasa Association, and the bereaved families — represented by Dr. Hassan Kamagtey — all stood in solidarity, reflecting the power of unity, faith, and remembrance.

The atmosphere was enriched with the soulful recitations of the Holy Qur’an and solemn supplications offered by the Imams of Yankasa Mosque and other eminent Islamic scholars. The gathering was not only a prayer for the departed but a reaffirmation that their works, service, and sacrifices continue to inspire.

In a fitting tribute, the Zongo Caucus, in partnership with the Yankasa Association and the families, plans to establish an Annual Public Lecture Series to immortalize the legacies of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Hon. Muniru Limuna.

This lecture, to be titled:
“Faith, Service, and Leadership: The Legacy of Muslim Statesmen”
will serve as a platform to articulate Islamic values, highlight the virtues of selfless service, and inspire future generations to embrace leadership rooted in humility, faith, and justice.

The Adua in New York was more than a memorial. It was a reminder that death does not silence legacies, and faith does not end at the grave. As the Qur’an assures:
“Indeed, the friends of Allah — there will be no fear upon them, nor will they grieve.” (Qur’an 10:62)

Through remembrance, unity, and the resolve to carry forward their vision, the Zongo fraternity has shown that the names of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Hon. Muniru Limuna will remain engraved in the heart of the community, the nation, and history.
