Protecting Media Freedoms: A Call to Action

Ghanaian-Media

Dear Colleague Journalists,

Today, as you cast your vote, remember the pivotal role we play in upholding democracy. We are witnesses to the events shaping our nation, and perhaps no group understands these challenges more intimately than us.

Restoring Press Freedom
Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, we experienced greater access and freedoms as journalists. Regular press briefings and open communication with the presidency were hallmarks of his administration, fostering transparency. In contrast, the Nana-Bawumia regime has closed its doors to local media, prioritizing international platforms while ignoring our requests. This unaccountable approach signals their disregard for transparency and press engagement, underscoring the need for change.

The Erosion of Safety and Trust
Ghana’s press freedom has declined sharply, with the Afrobarometer Round 9 survey highlighting a rise in authoritarian tendencies under the current regime. Ghana recorded its worst ranking on the Press Freedom Index in 18 years. Between 2019 and 2023, the Media Foundation for West Africa documented 79 violations against journalists, a distressing precedent in our Fourth Republic.

High-profile cases, including the unresolved murder of Ahmed Suale and attacks on investigative journalists like Anas Aremeyaw Anas and Manasseh Azure Awuni, highlight the hostility we face. Self-censorship is on the rise, as many fear criminal charges reminiscent of the dark days of criminalized speech.

Economic Hardships in Journalism
The collapsing economy has left journalists in financial distress, with delayed salaries, mounting debts, and struggles to make ends meet. Media houses face discrimination in accessing state resources, reflecting the broader economic mismanagement that has affected all Ghanaians.

Why We Must Vote for Change
This election is a moment for us to stand not just with the masses whose stories we tell but for ourselves. Let us vote for:

Safety and security in our profession.
An end to impunity against journalists.
Economic relief and fair treatment for media workers.
John Dramani Mahama: A Trusted Ally
John Dramani Mahama has consistently demonstrated his commitment to press freedom and accountability. As one of us, he understands the challenges we face and offers a vision of inclusivity and respect for the media.

I urge you to vote for our shared future, for safety, security, and economic dignity.

Wishing you strength as you report on this critical election. May we work tirelessly for truth and democracy, guided by our shared humanity.

Sincerely,
Shamima Muslim
One of You
