Next NDC Gov’t will improve the lives of cocoa farmers – Eric Opoku

0

The Ranking Member for Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs in Parliament, Hon. Eric Opoku has assured cocoa farmers in the country of the NDC’s commitment to improve their lives when voted to power.

Mr Opoku who is also the Legislator for Asunafo South in the Ahafo Region host of Dwaboase on Power FM, Kwame Minkah, that although cocoa prices have gone up, the government did not give the poor farmers what is due them.

His comment comes after the Government has announced a 45 percent increase in the producer price of cocoa for the 2024/2025 crop season last month.

By the 45 percent increas, a 64 kilogramme bag of cocoa beans has increased to GH¢3,000 from GH¢2,070.

At the beginning of the 2023/2024 crop season, a bag of 64kg of cocoa beans was sold at GH¢1,300 and was subsequently increased to GH¢2,070 when the spot price went up on the world market under the same period.

Mr Opoku who is passionate about agriculture said cocoa farmers have been shortchanged with the new price, stressing that the government is only paying for 30 percent of the price of cocoa to farmers.

“The world market price for cocoa has gone up and you know Ghana has the best cocoa beans on the market. Our calculations indicate that the price per a ton of cocoa has gone up. The government is supposed to pay GHS 9,700 to every farmer for a bag of cocoa,” he explained.

He also explained that Ghana Cocoa Board has not been working in the interest of the farmers who toil to grow and harvest cocoa in remote areas.

Mr Opoku assured that the next NDC government will boost cooa production and give farmers what is due them, adding that their bonuses will be paid on time.

He stated that one of the policies that boosted cocoa production under the Mahama administration, the free fertilizer programme, will be restored to support farmers in the cocoa value chain.

Catholic church to lead prayer protest against galamsey Oct. 11

0

The Catholic Church of the Accra Archdiocese, in collaboration with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious in Ghana, will be leading a large-scale prayer protest next week. This initiative seeks to rally Ghanaians from all walks of life to unite in both prayer and action to end the devastation caused by galamsey.

The protest, scheduled for Friday, 11 October 2024, which is expected to draw support from over 50 organisations that have already voiced concerns over galamsey, will combine prayer with public demonstrations.

In a statement, the organisers emphasised the spiritual dimension of the fight against illegal mining, urging citizens to “call on God to do what we cannot do as humans to intervene in this galamsey fight.”

The church also highlighted the importance of human effort in the battle against the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.

“While we as human beings also do our bit to get the government to do the needful to stop galamsey, we must not forget the power of prayer,” the statement noted.

Participants will march through the streets with placards, expressing their concerns about the ongoing crisis.

The event will culminate in the presentation of petitions to key national figures, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The protest will end with a solemn Episcopal Mass led by His Grace, the Archbishop of Accra, as the main celebrant.

Organisers are calling on all Ghanaians to join the movement and “pray and petition to stop galamsey immediately.”

A bag of cement was GH₵25 under NDC, but now it is more than GH₵100 – Mahama

0

Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to stbilise the economy. He says that economic stability will lead to the reduction in prices of essential commodities such as food and fuel.

Mr Mahama indicated that the NDC has a track record of managing an economy that works for all Ghanaians. He recollected that during his tenure in office,  cement price was GHS25. However, it has shot up to GHs100 under the present administration. In a Facebook post, Mr Mahama said “I am committed to leading a team that will stabilise and transform the economy. This transformation will stop the daily increases in the price of essential products such as fuel, food, and general goods and bring prices down.

When the NDC was in office, a bag of cement cost GH₵25, but now it is more than GH₵100. Fuel cost GH₵14 per gallon in 2016, but the NPP said it was too expensive. Today, a gallon costs more than GH₵70. That is why we will work hard to stabilise the economy so that the prices of goods and services will be reduced and things will be more affordable for the people.

“Akufo-Addo and Bawumia’s destruction of the economy has badly affected rural dwellers, but they can be assured that the next Mahama government will lessen their financial burden.”

The Forgotten Plight of Fulani Women in Ghana: A heart-wrenching tale of neglect and suffering.

0

Ahmed M. Gedel Writes:

In the heart of Ghana, a silent struggle rages on, hidden from the prying eyes of the NPP government and the world. Fulani women, already marginalized and oppressed, bear the brunt of the farmer-herder conflict, their lives a testament to the failures of the NPP government and Samira Bawumia’s empty promises.

These women, forced to travel extensively in search of pasture, are denied access to basic services like healthcare and education. The consequences are dire: elevated maternal mortality rates and limited opportunities for their daughters. Cultural norms dictate that women cannot own livestock or land, condemning them to a life of poverty and dependence.

As the conflict escalates, farmer women suffer too. Their livelihoods are destroyed, crops stolen, and families disrupted. Widowed women are evicted from their lands, left to beg or take on subservient jobs. The trauma of gender-based violence looms large, with women and girls targeted for rape and abduction.

The irony is stark. Samira Bawumia urges Fulanis to ensure a “sound and emphatic victory” for the NPP, while her government and the husband ignores the very real struggles of Fulani women. President Akufo-Addo’s regime is a “glorified failure,” leaving Ghana to sink deeper into chaos.

It is time to move beyond empty promises and take concrete action to address the farmer-herder conflict and protect Fulani women’s rights. That’s why the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by John Mahama, is the beacon of hope. With their Women’s Manifesto launched in Kumasi, Mahama has pledged to introduce groundbreaking legislation to empower women.

Empowering Women, Empowering Ghana
The NDC’s vision includes:
1.Property Rights of Spouses Bill: Ensuring women receive their rightful share of property in the event of divorce or separation.

2.Domestic Workers Bill: Protecting vulnerable domestic workers, predominantly women, from exploitation and abuse.

3.Increased Women’s Representation: Boosting women’s presence in Parliament, district assemblies, and leadership roles.

But that’s not all. Mahama has also promised to establish a bank specifically for women, providing them with access to financial resources and economic opportunities.
The NDC’s commitment to women’s empowerment is genuine, and their track record speaks for itself.

With Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as Mahama’s running mate, the NDC is poised to make history and bring about real change. Mahama’s Empowerment Agenda seeks to address these challenges by promoting women’s rights, education, and economic empowerment.

While the journey ahead is long, Mahama’s commitment to Fulani women’s welfare is a crucial step toward a more inclusive and equitable Ghana.

We all can’t suffer for the sins of a few, deal with the ‘galamseyers’ – Subin MP to Akufo-Addo

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has called on President Akufo-Addo to take decisive action against government officials who have failed to effectively combat the galamsey menace. His appeal comes amidst growing frustration over the government’s inability to curb illegal mining activities that have wreaked havoc on the environment and local communities.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews on Thursday, October 3, Mr Antwi stressed the detrimental impact of galamsey on the nation’s water bodies, forests, and agricultural lands.

He insisted that the continued degradation of the environment poses a significant threat to the livelihoods of many Ghanaians, particularly those in rural areas dependent on these resources for their survival.

The lawmaker’s remarks resonate with the concerns of many citizens who are increasingly disillusioned with the government’s efforts to address the issue.

Mr Antwi specifically pointed out that certain government officials have not only failed to implement existing policies effectively but have also allowed illegal mining operations to flourish under their watch.

He believes that accountability is crucial and that officials who are not performing their duties should be held responsible for their inaction.

The MP urged the President to consider their dismissal as a necessary step toward restoring public trust and demonstrating a genuine commitment to tackling the galamsey crisis.

“If we know the people doing the illegal mining, if they are party people or political opponents, let’s walk in there and get them arrested and make them face the law. This party will be better served in government than in opposition because of the corrupt or illegal position of certain employees.”

“We are not going to condone it. I am an NPP person and I am not going to sit here and condone an illegality. Something that I have not been part of, why should I come and support or defend it,” he insisted.

The Subin MP’s view contradicts that of other NPP MPs who believe that any attempt to deal with galamsey at this time will cause the party to lose votes in the impending general elections.

Ignore Akufo-Addo’s plea – Ansah-Asare to Organised Labour

0

A former director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansah-Asare, has urged Organised Labour to disregard President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appeal to call off its planned nationwide strike against illegal mining.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appealed to Organised Labour to reconsider its planned strike scheduled for October 10, emphasising his commitment to addressing their concerns regarding illegal mining, which is wreaking havoc on Ghana’s environment.

The president made the appeal during a closed-door meeting on Thursday, October 3, with Organised Labour’s leaders, where the urgent need for decisive action against illegal mining was a central topic of discussion.

Ansah-Asare criticised Akufo-Addo for failing to follow through on his promise to put his presidency on the line in the fight against the galamsey menace, citing a lack of sincerity in addressing the issue.

“On assumption of office, he said he would put his presidency on the line and said should he fail the galamsey fight, he would pay for it. We have asked him to apologise but he hasn’t apologised.

“He has only eight weeks [to end his tenure] and by now, he should have allowed his vice, Dr. Bawumia to assume the reigns of government. He shouldn’t be asking organised labour to do anything.

“He has not been sincere. You will not keep any promise that you give within the next eight weeks. So as far as I am concerned, organised labour should proceed with the timetable.”

NDC will continue abandoned cocoa roads – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang

0

The Vice Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, says the next NDC administration will continue all cocoa road projects abandoned by the government. Addressing NDC supporters at a rally in Datano in the Bodi Constituency as part of her three-day campaign tour of the Western North Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed concern about the government’s abandonment of cocoa roads.

She said the government has failed to make its report on cocoa road projects public, after falsely accusing the Mahama administration. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged the people not to lose hope as the next NDC administration will continue all abandoned cocoa road projects in the area.

Touching on the cocoa sector, she said the NDC government will also bring back the free fertilizer programme and pay the right producer price to cocoa farmers. Prof Opoku-Agyemang therefore urged the electorates to vote massively for John Dramani Mahama and NDC parliamentary candidates in the December general elections.

Navrongo: Asiedu Nketiah appeals for party unity ahead of December polls

0

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has called on party members in the Upper East Region to put aside differences stemming from the recent parliamentary primaries and work together for victory in the December 7 elections.

In the Navrongo Central Constituency, tensions arose following the primaries, leading to divisions between supporters of the incumbent Member of Parliament, Sampson Chiragia, and those of the newly elected Parliamentary Candidate, Simon Aworigo.

Clashes erupted after Chiragia lost his seat in the primaries. During a three-day visit to the region, Asiedu Nketiah addressed party supporters in Naaga, urging them to move beyond the past and unite to win the upcoming elections. He emphasized the importance of solidarity and teamwork to ensure the NDC’s success in December.

“My message to Navrongo Central is if we want to eat and survive, let us all eat and survive. If we don’t want to eat and survive and want to kill ourselves, we’ll all die together. After the primaries, the situation was very bad. I came here and intervened. I am happy with the level of cooperation now.

“It is not the individuality but their supporters on the field. The individuals would be working together, but their supporters would say if not Sampson no Simon and Simon’s supporters would say if no Simon, no Sampson.”

National Tenants’ Union declares support for NDC’s housing projects

0

The National Tenants Union of Ghana (NATUG) has publicly endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) housing policies after reviewing various political parties’ proposals. NATUG praised the NDC’s plans to establish an independent Rent Authority by transforming the Rent Control Department.

They also appreciated the party’s commitment to introducing low-interest rent advance schemes and promoting affordable housing options.

NATUG criticized the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) housing promises, labeling them “recycled, unfulfilled, and broken.” This announcement comes as John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, has vowed to prioritize low-cost housing for Ghanaians. NATUG said the NDC’s housing policies align with its goals, declaring its support for the party.

In a statement dated Wednesday, October 2, NATUG said, “After comparing the housing policies of both parties, the National Tenants’ Union of Ghana have decided to endorse the housing proposals of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).” The group called on the NDC to fully implement these policies if elected, to alleviate the housing challenges facing many Ghanaians, cautioning to hold Mahama accountable in 2028 if he wins the elections.

“Furthermore, we call on the NDC’s leadership and their Presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama to fully implement these policies if elected, to alleviate the housing challenges facing many Ghanaians. “The Union will hold a future John Dramani Mahama-led government accountable to these promises during the 2025-2028 period.”

Cut off my head if Bawumia wins in a single Zongo community—NDC Officer

0

The National Communication Director for the Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Mohammed Naziru Seidu, has stated categorically that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will not win in any of the Zongo communities in the upcoming elections. He asserted that the candidate of the NDC, former President John Dramani Mahama, will sweep all the Zongo communities.

In a statement made on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, he made a striking declaration, volunteering to have his head cut off should the Vice President triumph in a single Zongo community. When he was told this was an extreme political talk, he insisted that if Dr. Bawumia wins in a single Zongo community, his head should be cut off. He posited that it was obvious that Mr. Mahama has been ordained by God to be elected as the next president of Ghana, and his victory would be massive.

He noted that prophets who had earlier prophesied against Mahama’s election win have now come up with a new prophecy, predicting his election as the next president. Alhaji Mohammed Naziru Seidu lamented that the ruling government, under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo with support from his vice president, has destroyed not only the country’s economy but all state institutions, religion, and our environment with galamsey.

The President Akufo-Addo and Bawumia administration, has not only destroyed our economy. They have also not destroyed our country with galamsey, but they have destroyed this country through religion. They want to divide this country through religion by making divisive religious comments. But I am telling you before God and man that if Bawumia is able to secure victory in one single Zongo community in Ghana, cut off my head. I repeat, if Bawumia is able to secure victory in one Zongo community in Ghana, cut off my head,’’ he declared.

He added, ‘’I know the work we have done and what we are still doing. We know the promises and focus of the Zongo communities. We know the challenges they are going through. We know what they have told us, and we know we will convince them to vote for former President John Dramani Mahama. That is why I have said that if Bawumia secures victory in one Zongo community, cut off my head’’.
